Let’s get a commitment from the presidential candidates to green the White House. Imagine our next president announcing on January 20, 2009, that he and the new first lady will be taking the following steps to green the White House:

  • Cover the south lawn with solar panels
  • Continue to reduce the resource consumption in the White House
  • Build a Living roof Plant plants that attract bees and native butterflies
  • Add more Solar (roof top or ground mounted) PV
  • Installation of a solar hot water system
  • Use wind power (micro turbines go on small buildings if there is good wind there)
  • Enlarge the organic garden (less turf lawn more garden on the south lawn, less pesticides in the Rose Garden)
  • Enlarge the edible garden—to serve fresh fruits and veggies to visiting heads of state
  • Serve only organic food in cafeteria
  • Create a policy where only Electric or hybrid vehicles are used for staff and dignitaries
  • More Native planting
  • Sustainable materials
  • Install a state-of-the-art Indoor air quality system
  • Look at ways to use Micro wind turbine technology
  • Improve water conservation
  • Use safe cleaning products (baking soda, etc)
  • Initiate grey water recycling as well as runoff water recycling systems

Greening the white house. What a powerful symbol of new leadership.

This move will set an extraordinary example for the country as we continue to endure record-high energy prices and global climate change.

The White House is our nation’s home. If it is energy-efficient and if its occupants and visitors are healthy while they tackle the nation’s urgent needs, perhaps they’ll not only consider the environment while making decisions but also they’ll encourage citizens to take action in their own homes and backyards.

Sign the pledge to get this issue in front of the next president. Then pass this on to your friends and neighbors. The next president has the opportunity to reverse the current course we’re on and lead the fight against climate change—starting at our White House.

This is all possible and simple, even easy.
